The Shrek universe is growing: A new film focusing on the Donkey character will be released in 2028
Following Shrek 5, DreamWorks is preparing a new film centered on the Donkey character. The production is scheduled to be released on June 30, 2028.
The Shrek series is preparing to expand with a new spin-off following the fifth film. DreamWorks Animation is working on a separate film centered on Donkey, one of the series' beloved characters.
The production, which will feature Eddie Murphy—who voices the Donkey character in the original version—in the lead role, is expected to meet audiences one year after Shrek 5. The film's release date is planned for June 30, 2028.
The new film is being designed as an origin story. Accordingly, the production will tell the story of how an ordinary donkey transformed into the Donkey character known from the Shrek films. The film will be directed by Charlie Bean, known for The Lego Ninjago Movie.
The main installment of the Shrek universe will continue with Shrek 5 after a 16-year hiatus. The fifth film of the series is scheduled to be released on June 30, 2027.
The Donkey film will not be the first spin-off project to emerge from the Shrek world. Previously, Puss in Boots films focusing on the Puss in Boots character were produced, and this series achieved significant success at the box office.
