The 'twins' of Greek mythology in Pompeii: 2,000-year-old wall painting discovered
A 2,000-year-old fresco has been discovered in the Archaeological Park of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. The fresco depicts the story of the twin siblings Phrixus and Helle from Greek mythology.
UNESCO World Heritage site Pompeii's archaeological team, which has conducted excavations and made numerous discoveries over the years, has unearthed a wall painting (fresco) with relatively well-preserved colors in one of the excavation areas.
In a statement yesterday, archaeologists noted that the approximately 2,000-year-old wall painting depicts the story of the twin siblings Phrixus and Helle from Greek mythology.
MYTHOLOGICAL STORY DEPICTED
According to Greek mythology, a ram with a golden fleece is sent to Phrixus and Helle, who are trying to escape their stepmother. While the two siblings are fleeing on the ram near the Dardanelles, Helle falls from the ram and drowns.
The colorful fresco unearthed in Pompeii depicts this mythological story.
