They spray-painted 'May your throat be knotted' on its walls: Historic madrasa restored to its former state

Recently in Sivas, the Çifte Minareli Medrese, one of the city's iconic structures built in 1271 by Ilkhanid Vizier Sahip Şemseddin Mehmet Cüveyni, was damaged after graffiti was spray-painted onto its walls.

LEGAL ACTION INITIATED

The 4 individuals who damaged the historical structure were apprehended. Legal proceedings were initiated against the 4 suspects for the crime of 'violating the Law No. 2863 on the Protection of Cultural and Natural Property'.

GRAFFITI REMOVED

The Regional Directorate of Foundations began efforts to remove the spray-painted graffiti from the side walls of the Çifte Minareli Medrese.

Employees of a contracted firm cleaned the writing on the madrasa's walls using a paint-removal technique.

Regional Director of Foundations Cemal Karaca stated in his remarks that everyone has a duty to protect historical monuments.

Karaca emphasized that removing graffiti from historical monuments poses challenges, stating, "Removing the writing from the walls was costly and difficult. Now, an easier method has been found, and I hope it spreads across Turkey. By using a paint-removal material that prevents the stone from being damaged after being pre-moistened, our monument is being restored to its clean state again."

The following had been spray-painted on the walls of the historic madrasa: "May I come to your mind at random and may your heart ache. May your throat be knotted. But do not cry, may your heart burn enough not to cry."
