751-year-old madrasa defaced with spray paint! 4 detained
An investigation has been launched into individuals who defaced the 751-year-old Çifte Minareli Madrasa in Sivas with spray paint. Judicial proceedings have been initiated against the 4 people involved.
The walls of the Çifte Minareli Madrasa, located in Sivas' historic city square and commissioned in 1271 by the Ilkhanate Vizier Shams al-Din Juvayni, were defaced with spray paint.
The writing on the wall, which read, 'May I come to your mind by chance and may your heart ache. May your throat be knotted. But do not cry, may your heart burn enough not to cry,' saddened those who saw it.
The Sivas Governor's Office issued a written statement regarding the incident, stating that an investigation has been launched into the 4 individuals identified as having written the graffiti.
"SUCH PEOPLE SHOULD BE PUNISHED"
Expressing his sadness at the sight, Harun Yıldırım said, “It caught my attention just now, and I immediately took out my phone. I took a photo and felt very sad. I really started the day badly. There is no compensation for this. I had sensed this danger before. There are many writings on the walls. Such people should be punished. There are laws against crime that are like a hot stove. When you touch it, whether you are 7 or 70, the stove burns you, right? Punishment is fair, immediate, and deterrent. When a crime is committed, we need to punish it immediately. In my opinion, this is a very serious crime. I hope such incidents do not happen again.”
"DO NOT HURT THEM WHERE THEY REST"
Ali Demir stated, “We are not teaching our history to our youth today. Because we don't teach it, and because they don't know history, they write such rude, immoral things. I hope they get punished. Let them be punished so it serves as an example, so others don't do it. I think they should not harm our history, our past, our ancestors, and our heritage. They should not hurt them where they rest.”
"INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED"
The statement made by the Sivas Governor's Office included the following:
“It has been determined that in recent days, some individuals used spray paint to write on the side walls of the Çifte Minareli Madrasa, one of the most important historical heritages of our city. Immediately after the incident, which occurred on December 16 at approximately 22:10, our Sivas Provincial Police Department teams conducted an investigation; 4 suspects have been detained, and a judicial investigation has been launched against the individuals for the crime of 'Violation of the Law on the Protection of Cultural and Natural Property No. 2863'.”
