Two protesters who struck the protective glass panel covering the famous Diego Velázquez oil painting on display at the National Gallery in London with hammers have been arrested. Two activists from the Just Stop Oil group, seeking to draw attention to climate change, targeted Velázquez's "Rokeby Venus" painting with small hammers.

After damaging the protective glass over the painting, one of the activists said, "It is time for action, not words! It is time to stop oil!" while the other activist stated, "Politicians have failed us. As long as oil continues to be used, millions will die!" The protest video, which was quickly shared on social media, concluded with the activists staging a sit-in after finishing their speeches and calling for further action on November 18.

Just Stop Oil activists announced that the protest carried out on Monday was in response to the British government's decision to grant more than 100 new licenses for oil and gas development activities in the North Sea.
