The legendary artist, whose full name was Mehmet Barış Manço, was born on January 2, 1943, in Istanbul and passed away in the same city on February 1, 1999.
Manço was a renowned Turkish artist, arranger, singer, composer, songwriter, television producer and host, columnist, and cultural ambassador.
Considered one of the pioneers of rock music in Turkey, Manço is among the founders of the Anatolian rock genre. The more than 200 songs he composed earned him twelve gold and one platinum album and cassette awards.
His songs have been interpreted in many languages, including Arabic, Bulgarian, Dutch, German, French, Hebrew, English, Japanese, and Greek.
Due to his travels to many countries around the world through the television programs he produced, he was also referred to as "Barış Çelebi." In recognition of his contributions to the arts, he was awarded the title of "State Artist of the Republic of Turkey" in 1991.
PERSONAL LIFE
Barış Manço, who married Lale Manço in 1978, had two sons named Doğukan and Batıkan from this union. Lale Manço played a supportive role in Barış Manço's musical career and artistic life.
DEATH
On the night of January 31, 1999, around 11:30 PM, Mehmet Barış Manço suffered a heart attack at his home in the Moda district of Istanbul and passed away at 1:30 AM that same night at the Siyami Ersek Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Hospital, where he had been rushed. A state funeral was held for the artist, who had previously suffered a heart spasm in 1983, as he had been awarded the title of state artist in 1991. The ceremony was broadcast live and uninterrupted by various channels.
