10 million lira fraud by jeweler

The fraud was uncovered on March 19 following complaints filed by the victims, who had their gold savings stolen, at the Çarşı Police Station.

Dozens of people defrauded by the jeweler stated that they had purchased gold for savings or left their gold in safekeeping at a business named Çağdaş Kuyumculuk, located on Hürriyet Street in the Yeni Karaman neighborhood of Osmangazi, Bursa.

In their statements, the complainants indicated that the shop owner had stalled them by taking money from customers who came to buy gold and promising to deliver the gold at a later date. They noted that after being told March 19 was the payment date, they arrived at the shop on that day only to find it closed, at which point they realized they had been defrauded.

Following the statements, the Fraud Bureau launched an investigation and determined that 27 complainants, whose statements were taken in the initial phase, had suffered a loss of 10 million lira due to the fraud committed by Çağdaş Kuyumculuk.

The suspect M.Y., an employee of the jewelry shop and the brother-in-law of the owner, was apprehended and taken into custody by teams, while efforts to capture the other fugitive suspects are ongoing.
