113 thousand people will lose their unemployment benefits

The federal government in Belgium has decided to limit unemployment benefits to a maximum of two years. This new regulation is planned to come into effect at the beginning of 2026, and with this change, 113 thousand people will lose their unemployment benefits.

The protection allowance provided for individuals with long-term health issues who are not reported as fit for work will also be abolished. However, individuals over the age of 55 who have worked for 30 years or more will be exempt from this regulation and will continue to receive their unemployment benefits.

Previously in Belgium, unemployment benefits were provided indefinitely, and unemployed individuals could receive an allowance at a rate of 65 percent of their last salary. This allowance, which decreased over time, was not cut off completely. However, this practice will end with the new regulation.

The Belgian government, which is struggling with high public debt and a budget deficit, plans to make cuts to social benefits. Such austerity policies in the country have recently been met with intense protests.
