12punto columnist Onur Alp Yılmaz reveals document on trade with Israel: 'Is the government supporting Israel's silent occupation?'
12punto columnist and political scientist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Onur Alp Yılmaz addressed CHP leader Özgür Özel's remarks on trade with Israel during his party's group meeting in his article today titled "The Document of Trade with Israel." Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yılmaz questioned how this figure has multiplied by referencing trade with Palestine in the context of trade with Israel.
CHP leader Özgür Özel spoke at his party's first group meeting of the new legislative term.
Emphasizing that trade with Israel, which was restricted, has increased again, CHP leader Özel stated, "Now, trade with Israel, which is said to be banned, is continuing at full speed. The de facto situation is currently as follows; the goods leave the port, documents are arranged on paper while at sea, they are transferred to another ship, and the trade continues. Hey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan; are you sincere or are we?"
12punto columnist and political scientist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Onur Alp Yılmaz drew attention to the Palestine detail in trade with Israel following CHP leader Özgür Özel's remarks.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yılmaz stated, "There has been an unprecedented increase in dollar terms in exports to Palestine. This increase reached such a level that trade with Palestine from April to August was more than the total of the previous 28 months. Therefore, I cannot help but ask whether the government is continuing trade with Israeli companies under the guise of Palestine..." and posed 5 questions by saying, "So, why? There are many reasons for this and questions that arise in my mind based on this reason."
'IS THE GOVERNMENT SUPPORTING THE OCCUPATION OF THE WEST BANK?'
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yılmaz asked the following:
1- Why might there be a need for this trade to an extent that Palestine did not have before?
2- I would like to draw your attention, I am talking about trade with Palestine... Not humanitarian aid, that is... Which business person/people paid such a large amount of money in Palestine (378 million dollars between May and August)?
3- While the total export was 306 million dollars in the 28 months from January 2022 to April 2024, isn't there something strange about reaching these figures in just 4 months between May and August 2024, and this period coinciding exactly with the period when trade with Israel was cut off?
4- If we look at the items that increased exports the most, we see that construction materials and furniture stand out (36%). While the war continues in Gaza, what will Palestinian merchants do with so much construction material?
5- If these products are going to Israel under the guise of Palestinian merchants - since there is a war in Gaza, construction cannot be done - are these products being used to build new settlements in the West Bank, which is Palestinian land and where Israel has been building houses for years and placing settlers? In other words, is the government supporting Israel's silent occupation of the West Bank?
'NATIONALIST-CONSERVATIVE AT HOME...'
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yılmaz continued his words as follows:
In other words, the government, which is trying to create a nationalist-conservative consolidation at home through the possibility of war with Israel, does not seem to refrain from trading with Israel in foreign policy...
When this is the case, one cannot help but remember the late Uğur Mumcu:
"Conservative and nationalist rhetoric at home, begging for credit with a bowed head abroad!"
