13 people arrested for wanting to celebrate May Day in Taksim
While 13 people who called for demonstrations at Taksim Square on May Day were arrested, 163 others were released. Most of those released were issued travel bans.
Many people were detained due to calls made for Taksim Square on May Day, International Workers' Day. With the AKP government closing Taksim to the public, those who wanted to gather in the square faced police intervention. While 372 of those detained were released from police custody, the processing of those referred to the Istanbul Courthouse continued until late at night.
Of those referred to the Criminal Judgeship of Peace, 13 were arrested. Among those arrested are Ali Haydar Saygılı, a member of the Central Executive Committee (MYK) of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP); Party Assembly (PM) members Aydın Kılıçdere and Hüseyin İldan; and Limter-İş Union Organizing Expert Devrim Yurtsever. ESP Co-Chair Murat Çepni is among those who were released.
While most of the 163 released individuals were issued travel bans, they were greeted with joy by their relatives and friends who gathered in front of the courthouse. In statements made, it was expressed that Taksim is an important space for May Day celebrations and that the celebrations should be held there.
