In the Sur district of Diyarbakır, 1 person lost their life and 12 people were injured during an armed brawl that broke out yesterday during the neighborhood headman (muhtar) election. 14 people have been detained in connection with the incident.
Diyarbakır’s Sur district saw 14 people detained following an armed brawl that broke out yesterday between the families of two candidates for neighborhood headman (muhtar) during the voting process, which resulted in 1 death and 12 injuries.
The incident occurred yesterday morning in the rural Ağaçlıdere neighborhood of the central Sur district. The argument between two candidates for headman, who had a pre-existing feud, escalated into an armed, stone-throwing, and club-wielding brawl when their families became involved. Mehmet Emin Çelik lost his life in the fight between the parties, and 12 people were injured.
Numerous law enforcement officers took security measures at the scene.
Following the incident, 14 suspects were detained as a result of the work initiated by gendarmerie teams. Efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend a large number of other suspects believed to have been involved in the incident.
