2.5 TL coin is coming
According to reports, it has been stated that the 2.5 TL coin will be put back into circulation and that preparations have begun.
According to a report by Erdoğan Süzer from Sözcü, it is stated that the General Directorate of the Mint and Stamp Printing House is awaiting approval from President Tayyip Erdoğan to mint new 2.5 TL coins.
PROPOSAL SUBMITTED TO ERDOĞAN
It has been learned that the General Directorate of the Mint and Stamp Printing House had initially proposed the minting of 2 TL coins to President Erdoğan, but that Erdoğan informed officials that a 2.5 TL coin would be more appropriate. Following this, it was stated that Mint officials conducted a new study on the 2.5 TL coin and submitted it to President Erdoğan.
5 TL WAS MINTED FOR THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY
The initial work for the 2.5 TL coin involved using a relief of Atatürk wearing a kalpak. However, this relief was used on the commemorative 5 TL coin minted specifically for the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey. For this reason, it was stated that a new relief is planned to be used for the 2.5 TL coin.
COST HAS INCREASED
Officials stated that they reduced the weight and the nickel content of the alloy to lower the production cost of the 1 TL coin, saying, "If this work had not been done, the cost of 1 TL today would have been around 3.5 liras." Officials noted that the cost of 1 TL rose to 2.7 liras due to rising commodity prices during the pandemic, then fell to 1.9 TL as prices dropped, but has since risen back to 2.30 TL today due to exchange rate increases. Officials also provided information that the cost of the 5 TL commemorative coins, along with the 1 TL coins, is 2.30 TL.
