2 citizens had lost their lives: A confession-like statement in the İzmir electrocution tragedy
The statements of suspects detained in the investigation into the tragedy in İzmir, where 2 citizens lost their lives after being electrocuted, have emerged. A person working as a fault repair technician at GDZ Elektrik stated, 'We did not have the task of replacing the pipe because we did not have the materials on hand,' once again highlighting the negligence.
In İzmir's Konak district, Özge Ceren Deniz and İnanç Öktemay, who were trying to escape to shelter from the heavy rainfall on July 12, lost their lives after being electrocuted on a water-filled road.
As the investigation into the tragedy, which has dominated Turkey's agenda, continues, the statements of the detained suspects have emerged.
The summary of proceedings prepared regarding the incident included information obtained from security camera footage.
According to the report on NTV; it was stated that personnel from İZSU and the relevant engineering firm were seen constructing the grates at the scene on January 4, and that Gediz Elektrik carried out work on January 9 following complaints that smoke was rising from the grate.
The suspects who were part of the teams that carried out these two operations also explained in their statements that the cable was close to the surface.
They stated that the protective pipe was cut and that the pipe could not be replaced because they did not have the materials on hand.
Z.T., who worked on the construction of the grate, said that they noticed an electrical line in the area while performing excavation work, and that they were instructed to stop the excavator and work with the help of shovels.
'During the grate construction work, generally 50 centimeters of connecting concrete is placed under the grate, but because there was not enough space at the site where we were working, we did not place this concrete and brought the concrete we had brought back to the construction site. The decision on whether or not to place the concrete belongs to İZSU, but since the hours we were working were late at night, no consultation was held with İZSU. The company official gave the instruction to cut the 300mm plastic pipe, place it under the grate, and pour concrete because there was not enough space. B.S. cut the pipe in accordance with this instruction, placed it under the grate, poured the concrete, and placed the grate on top.'
B.S., mentioned in the suspect's testimony, claimed that they did not damage any electrical lines or infrastructure during the process.
'WE DID NOT HAVE THE TASK OF REPLACING THE PIPE BECAUSE WE DID NOT HAVE THE MATERIALS ON HAND'
F.A., who works as a fault repair technician at GDZ Elektrik, stated that upon learning that smoke was coming from the sidewalk next to the grate, they performed excavation work until they reached the cable.
'It is true that the protective pipe was damaged. I do not know who did it. We do not have the task of replacing the pipe because we do not have the materials on hand. I do not know who installed this infrastructure; my job is only to fix faults. Cable testing teams perform this check.'
'I WANT THEM TO BE TRIED FOR INTENTIONAL ACTS'
The father of Özge Ceren Deniz, one of the two people who died after being electrocuted, went to the scene of the incident.
The grieving father stated that they want those responsible to receive the punishment they deserve, saying, 'I want all individuals, institutions, and organizations that have a fault in the incident to be tried. I do not want them to be tried for minor reasons, but for intentional acts.'
