2 citizens lost their lives to electric shock: GDZ Elektrik received millions from the ministry and municipalities
Following the tragedy in İzmir where Özge Ceren Deniz and İnanç Öktemay lost their lives after being electrocuted, it has emerged that GDZ Elektrik, which failed to perform necessary maintenance and repairs, received 174.5 million TL for lighting in 2023.
It has been revealed that GDZ Elektrik, the company responsible for distribution in the area of İzmir's Konak district where 2 citizens lost their lives due to electric shock during rainfall, received hundreds of millions of liras in payments.
According to a report by Mustafa Bildircin from Birgün, the company received 174.5 million TL from the ministry and municipalities for street and avenue lighting in 2023.
It was determined that the company, whose responsibility in the tragedy is being questioned due to allegations that it did not carry out maintenance and repair work with the necessary diligence, was transferred hundreds of millions of liras solely in exchange for lighting streets and avenues. Data on "General Lighting Payments" from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources revealed the scale of the resources transferred to the company.
GDZ IN SEVENTH PLACE
According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, a total of 3 billion 271 million 988 thousand TL was paid to 21 electricity distribution companies in Turkey in 2023 for the lighting of streets and avenues. Toroslar Elektrik received the largest share of the payments made under the name of "General Lighting Payment" from the budgets of the ministry, municipalities, and provincial special administrations, with 371 million 822 thousand TL. GDZ Elektrik, whose responsibility is being questioned in the İzmir tragedy, ranked seventh among the 21 electricity distribution companies in terms of the share it received.
174 MILLION TL IN 2023
According to the data, GDZ Elektrik received a total payment of 174 million 552 thousand TL in 2023 for the lighting of streets and avenues. The distribution of the 174.5 million TL paid to GDZ Elektrik by institution was recorded as follows:
- Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources: 139 million 642 thousand TL
- Metropolitan Municipality: 2 million 68 thousand TL
- Municipalities belonging to the Metropolitan Municipality: 32 million 842 thousand TL
THEY WERE RELEASED
The investigation conducted by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the death of two people due to electric shock is ongoing. The procedures at the police station for the 3 suspects detained the previous day have been completed.
The suspects referred to the courthouse were released under judicial control conditions. Meanwhile, İnanç Öktemay's mother, Nevin Öktemay, stated that she trusts the justice system and believes that those responsible will receive the necessary punishments.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On July 12, during a downpour in İzmir, Özge Ceren Deniz, a student at the Faculty of Medicine of Demokrasi University, was electrocuted on a water-filled road while trying to take shelter. Musician İnanç Öktemay, who wanted to save Deniz, was also electrocuted and collapsed to the ground. Both citizens lost their lives at the hospitals to which they were taken.
