20-year prison sentence for defendant who caused the death of cyclist Doğanay Güzelgün

The trial of the detained defendant Temel Ünlü (25), who allegedly fled from a police checkpoint in Bostancı on July 18, 2023, and struck and killed cyclist Doğanay Güzelgün (51), has concluded. The sentencing hearing held at the Anadolu 20th High Criminal Court was attended by the detained defendant Temel Ünlü, the complainants, and the lawyers for both parties.

“I SEEK YOUR FORGIVENESS”

In his defense, defendant Temel Ünlü stated, "I did not use narcotics that day. I only consumed alcohol at night; I admitted that I had consumed alcohol when I surrendered to the prosecutor's office. If I had wanted to, I would not have admitted it, and it would not have shown up in the blood test. However, I told the truth. I wish this had not happened. I seek your forgiveness. I also offer my condolences to the family of the deceased."

NO REDUCTION IN SENTENCE

The court decided that there was no room for discretionary reduction in the defendant's sentence, taking into account that the defendant fled after the incident and did not surrender for approximately 2 months, that he sent witness Mehmet Can C. to the scene of the accident to take the blame, that the defendant exhibited negative behavior after committing the crime, and that the defendant has a criminal record that constitutes a second instance of recidivism, all of which indicate that he possesses an incorrigible personality.

Announcing its verdict, the court panel sentenced the defendant Temel Ünlü to 20 years in prison for the crime of "causing death by probable intent."
