29 rounds have passed: Still no result in the Court of Cassation presidential elections!
In the 29th round of the presidential elections held due to the expiration of Court of Cassation President Mehmet Akarca's 4-year term, no candidate was able to secure an absolute majority.
The 4-year term of Akarca, who was elected to the presidency of the Court of Cassation on March 24, 2020, expired as of March 24.
In this context, members of the Court of Cassation went to the polls on Monday, March 25, to determine the new president of the High Court, who will serve for 4 years.
Because no candidate was able to receive at least 175 votes—the absolute majority of the 348 Court of Cassation members—in the first 28 rounds of the election, a 29th round of voting was held.
As a result of the voting, in which the two candidates who received the highest number of votes in the previous round could participate, Ömer Kerkez, Head of the 3rd Civil Chamber, received 141 votes, and Muhsin Şentürk, Head of the 3rd Criminal Chamber, received 116 votes. Participation in the election was recorded as 322, with 13 blank votes cast and 52 votes deemed invalid.
Due to the failure to achieve an absolute majority, the election is continuing with a 30th round of voting.
An absolute majority of the total number of members is required for the elections.
