32 women murdered in April!

The We Will Stop Femicide Platform has released its data report for April 2024. The report states that 32 women were murdered across Turkey and that 13 women's deaths were suspicious.

According to the details of the report, 59 percent of the murdered women lost their lives at the hands of their current or former partners.

It was determined that the most common location for these murders was the women's own homes, at 56 percent.

''32 FEMICIDES IN APRIL''

"Our struggle to stop femicide in Turkey has been ongoing for 14 years. As a platform, we have been publicly disclosing femicide data since 2010, when we identified the need. Unfortunately, ministries systematically fail to keep or share data on femicide. While we disclose the reality of femicide and suspicious deaths of women, it is also the state's duty to implement concrete solutions to stop femicides. We will continue our struggle to ensure that all relevant ministries and mechanisms are mobilized to fulfill this duty.

''THE FAILURE TO IDENTIFY BY WHOM AND WHY WOMEN ARE MURDERED...''

This month, 32 femicides were committed, and 13 women were found dead under suspicious circumstances. Of the 32 murdered women, 10 were killed under the pretext of wanting to make decisions about their own lives—such as wanting a divorce, refusing to reconcile, refusing to marry, or refusing a relationship; 1 was killed under the pretext that her mother would not reconcile with her father; 1 was killed under the pretext of feeding a cat; 1 girl child was killed under the pretext of throwing a stone; and 1 was killed for economic reasons. For 18 of them, the motive could not be determined. The fact that the motive for the murder of 18 women could not be determined is a result of the invisibility of violence against women and femicide. As long as it is not determined by whom and why women are murdered; as long as fair trials are not conducted and suspects, defendants, and murderers do not receive deterrent sentences; and as long as preventive measures are not implemented, violence continues to evolve and persist. We would like to share with you the names of our sisters, each of whom was a life:
