33 out of 41 products in supermarkets saw price hikes in January: Price decreases observed in 7 percent

Stating that the price difference between the producer and the market was highest in carrots at 278.1 percent, Bayraktar reported that the price difference in carrots was followed by parsley at 275.8 percent, leeks at 229.8 percent, and lettuce at 225.7 percent, with carrots and parsley being sold for 3.8 times more, and leeks and lettuce for 3.3 times more.

Bayraktar noted that carrots, which are 10 lira 50 kuruş at the producer, are sold for 39 lira 70 kuruş in the market; parsley, which is 5 lira 57 kuruş, for 20 lira 92 kuruş; leeks, which are 13 lira 53 kuruş, for 44 lira 64 kuruş; and lettuce, which is 10 lira 87 kuruş, for 35 lira 39 kuruş.

Providing information on the products with the highest price increases and decreases in January, Bayraktar said:

"The product with the highest price decrease in the market was dried beans, while it was leeks at the producer level. In January, price increases were observed in 33 out of 41 products in the market, while price decreases were seen in 7. No price change was observed in one product. The product with the highest price increase in the market that month was zucchini at 67.2 percent. The price increase in zucchini was followed by green peppers at 54.1 percent, eggplant at 48.5 percent, and cucumbers at 41.7 percent. The product with the highest price decrease in the market was dried beans at 14.6 percent. The price drop in dried beans was followed by leeks at 9.4 percent, oranges at 5.7 percent, and potatoes at 5 percent."

ZUCCHINI PRICES ROSE, LEEKS BECAME CHEAPER

Bayraktar noted that in January, price increases occurred in 19 out of 33 products at the producer level, while price decreases were seen in 6, and no price change occurred in 8 products.

Pointing out that the highest price decrease at the producer level was seen in leeks at 11 percent, Bayraktar stated, "The price decrease in leeks was followed by eggs at 7 percent, cauliflower at 4.4 percent, and olive oil at 2.3 percent. The highest price increase at the producer level was seen in zucchini at 179.2 percent. The price increase in zucchini was followed by green peppers at 119.7 percent, cucumbers at 118.8 percent, and eggplant at 100.5 percent."

Bayraktar stated that the autumn season in greenhouses has ended and planting for the spring season is underway.

Emphasizing that during this transition period, supply for zucchini, green peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, and tomatoes has decreased and prices have risen because newly planted products have not yet reached harvest maturity, Bayraktar assessed, "Another factor reducing supply in this product group is the decrease in yield per unit area due to cold weather. The extreme rainfall, storms, tornadoes, and hail disasters that occurred in our coastal provinces, especially in Antalya, as well as Mersin and Muğla, in the last week of January were another factor causing the rise in prices for this product group. A decrease in demand led to a decline in cauliflower and leek prices."

Bayraktar stated that egg prices have declined due to excess supply in the domestic market and ongoing restrictions on the export of table eggs.
