5.1 magnitude earthquake in Sındırgı

According to the statement made by AFAD, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in Sındırgı, Balıkesir, at 00:24. The earthquake took place at a depth of 11.04 km.

The earthquake was felt in surrounding provinces, including Istanbul, as well as Bursa and Izmir. Four minutes after the first earthquake, an aftershock of 3.6 magnitude occurred at the same depth.

Balıkesir Governor İsmail Ustaoğlu stated the following in a post on his social media account:

"A 5.1 magnitude earthquake has occurred in our Sındırgı district. As of now, there are no negative reports. Field scans by AFAD and our relevant institutions are ongoing. I extend my best wishes to our citizens affected by the earthquake."

MINISTER YERLİKAYA: FIELD SCANS HAVE BEGUN IMMEDIATELY

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said, "A 5.1 magnitude earthquake has occurred in Sındırgı, Balıkesir. Regarding the earthquake, which was also felt in surrounding provinces, all teams from AFAD and our relevant institutions have immediately begun field scans. I extend my best wishes to our citizens affected by the earthquake. May God protect our country and our nation from disasters."

FIRST STATEMENT FROM ŞENER ÜŞÜMEZSOY

The first statement from Şener Üşümezsoy was that if this earthquake occurred on the same fault line where previous earthquakes have taken place, there would be no cause for concern.

Üşümezsoy stated that a risk could exist if this earthquake occurred on a different fault line, noting that it is not possible to speak on this matter without sufficient information.

Regarding the earthquake model in the region, Üşümezsoy stated that if the activity jumps to a new fault in this area, an earthquake of magnitude 6 could occur.

Şener Üşümezsoy also made a statement regarding the earthquakes that occurred one after another yesterday, noting that those earthquakes were on the same fault line where previous ones had occurred.
