The Republican People's Party (CHP) held its Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting yesterday, where one of the key agenda items was the Bylaws Convention to be held between September 4-8.
During the meeting, information was provided regarding the Bylaws Commission's meeting held last Friday, the current status of the work, and the next steps. CHP officials stated that there is strong demand from the party organization regarding primary elections for candidate selection and term limits, and that changes will be made in these two areas.
With days left until the CHP's bylaws convention, calls for an elective convention have begun to rise. There is loud debate within the CHP regarding the possibility of holding a vote for the party chairmanship. Most recently, CHP Group Deputy Chairman Gökhan Günaydın stated that an elective convention could be held 15 days after the bylaws convention.
CHP Group Deputy Chairman Gökhan Günaydın was a guest on Tele 1, hosted by veteran journalist Tuncay Mollaveisoğlu. Evaluating the discussions surrounding the bylaws convention, Günaydın said:
“If the convener puts it on the agenda, it can be an elective one; if the Party Assembly had made this call, it would have been impossible for it to be elective. Özgür Özel himself made the call, and while doing so, he said, 'I am making this call; if our friends desire it to be elective, I will take the initiative to make it elective, and as the convener, I will turn the convention into an elective one.' Therefore, there is no point where we can say it cannot be elective. There is less than a month ahead of us. It could be elective or non-elective,” he said. It is possible for the party's voters, its professionals, and those who are dissatisfied with the party's management. It is possible for the convention delegates. What is the path for this? It is an extraordinary convention. We have around 1,400 delegates; anyone who can reach 700 delegates can change the Chairman and the Party Assembly.”
520 SIGNATURES READY
According to information obtained by 12punto, the signature collection process for the convention has begun, and 520 signatures are considered ready.
Former CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu had received 536 votes against Özgür Özel in the previous convention. Özgür Özel, on the other hand, had taken the seat of CHP Chairman with 812 votes.
KILIÇDAROĞLU WILL NOT BE THE 'ONE TO TAKE THE FIRST STEP'
According to information obtained by 12punto, Kılıçdaroğlu will not be the “one to take the first step” for an elective convention. However, it is likely that Kılıçdaroğlu will step onto the stage once the process for an elective convention begins.
Another reason for the discussion of an elective convention process is the ongoing legal case against Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, which carries the risk of a political ban.
If İmamoğlu's sentence in this case is upheld, he would be considered politically banned, which would lead to the termination of his position as Mayor of Istanbul. For some time, there has been a debate about who would take the seat if İmamoğlu were to leave, and the names of Üsküdar Mayor Sinem Dedetaş and Şişli Mayor Resul Emrah Şahan have come to the fore.
There are several different anticipated developments that could bring the elective convention process to the table in the CHP. We will see in the coming days whether any of these will be put into action.
