70 police officers died by suicide in 2024, 8 in the first 15 days of this year

Faruk Sezer, spokesperson for the Voice of the Police Platform, made statements regarding the problems faced by police officers.

Stating that the biggest problem within the police force is 'suicide,' Sezer said, "We are presenting solution proposals; we are explaining what needs to be done to prevent suicides and what results have emerged from our research. We are saying that these results contain information necessary for moving the police organization forward and that the political establishment needs to do something about this."

"RESEARCH MUST BE CONDUCTED WITHOUT PREJUDICE"

Speaking to ANKA, Sezer argued that the political establishment and those managing the police organization are doing nothing to solve this problem.

Stating that his colleagues fall into depression due to excessive work without rest, do not receive the compensation they deserve for their work, and struggle with forced reassignments, Sezer noted the following:

"They send the message, 'We will take your profession away from you.' The administration that does this, the management level that does this, unfortunately causes police organization employees to fall into depression more quickly and struggle with unwanted problems like suicide. Research must be conducted here with the naked eye, absolutely without prejudice. The last 3 to 6 months of the lives of our colleagues who took their own lives must be investigated. Their spouses, mothers, and fathers must be visited and their statements taken. Even their children's statements should be taken in the presence of pedagogues. The state of mind of that individual who took their own life within the last 6 months must be observed. Many of our colleagues leave small notes just before taking their own lives, and some write pages-long letters. When we look at these pages-long letters, we see that many of them complain about their superiors, working conditions, and the place where they work. Even this alone reveals that we need to conduct a detailed investigation."

Stating that police officers commit suicide due to "intimidation and mobbing," Faruk Sezer said, "In 2024, 70 of our colleagues took their own lives. In the first fifteen days of 2025, 8 of our colleagues took their own lives. We are on the 15th day and 8 of our colleagues have chosen the path of giving up on life. We invite the Ministry of Interior, the General Directorate of Security, and the management of the police organization to take action so that these end, so that these easy deaths come to an end."
