8-year-old child's arm broken by classmate in Istanbul

A violent incident at a primary school in the Tepecik neighborhood of Büyükçekmece resulted in a child's arm being broken in two places following a fight between two young children. It is alleged that a 9-year-old child assaulted 8-year-old Y.K.Ş., forcing his arm and causing it to break in two different places.

INCIDENT CAME TO LIGHT IN THE CLASSROOM

During the incident, which occurred last month, it was stated that teachers called the family and said, 'Your son got into a fight with his friend and hit his arm against the wall.' When the family took the child to the hospital, they learned that his arm was broken in two separate places and required urgent surgery. Y.K.Ş. was treated with a surgery that involved inserting a metal plate into his arm.

PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE DECIDES AGAINST PROSECUTION DUE TO 'AGE'

Following a complaint by the mother, Songül Gökdemir, the prosecutor's office decided that there were 'no grounds for prosecution' because the child accused of the act was under 12 years old. While the family has appealed the decision, it was learned that the victim has been unable to attend school for weeks due to his treatment. It was reported that Y.K.Ş. will undergo another surgery in two weeks to have the metal plates removed.

Mother Gökdemir stated that before the incident, her child had told her he was frequently assaulted by his friends. Gökdemir noted that her son had told her, 'A friend is trying to break my arm,' and that they had also complained to the school counselor.

Expressing that when she went to the school after the incident, her son was sitting in class and no ambulance had been called, Gökdemir said the following:

'The teacher was teaching the lesson. My son was in class, sitting there with a broken arm. I learned at the hospital that there were two fractures. He was operated on three days later. His dressing is changed every day, and he will undergo surgery again in two weeks.'

ALLEGATION OF "REVENGE FOR REPORTING TO THE TEACHER"

According to the family's claims, the child who committed the act explained the incident by saying, "I took revenge because he reported me to the teacher." Mother Gökdemir stated that during visits after the incident, the other family told them, "We are working, we cannot take care of him."

Gökdemir also alleged that 4th-grade students at the school would go down to the floor where the 3rd graders were, "pulling up their hoods and walking around like a gang," and that there were incidents of pushing and physical assault against some students on the stairs.

It was noted that she was told during a meeting with the school that the incident was not visible on camera recordings and that the moment of the assault occurred in a spot not covered by the cameras.
