A lawsuit has been filed against Çatalca Mufti Ahmet Mehmetalioğlu, seeking up to 9 years in prison on charges of inciting the public to hatred and enmity and insulting a public official. 9-year prison sentence sought for Çatalca Mufti: Remarks about women and Erdoğan included in the file

A prison sentence of up to 9 years has been sought for Çatalca Mufti Ahmet Mehmetalioğlu on charges of “publicly degrading a segment of the public based on social class, religion, sect, and regional differences” and “publicly insulting and slandering a public official due to their duty.”

According to the report on NTV, the investigation file also includes the mufti's 2014 posts degrading women and his statements directed at then-Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Mehmetalioğlu is expected to appear before a judge in the coming days.

HIS POST WAS CHANGED

While the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) launched an investigation into Mehmetalioğlu following the controversial posts, the mufti's place of duty was changed from Çatalca to Kocaeli as a preacher. Mehmetalioğlu announced his new place of duty on his social media account.

STREET NAME CHANGED TO 'VOLKAN KONAK'

The Çatalca Municipality had changed the name of Nar Street in the district to “Volkan Konak Street” as a reaction to the mufti. The decision was made with the aim of keeping the name of Volkan Konak alive on the street located right behind the mufti's office.
