Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu made statements regarding the agenda during a live broadcast he attended.

SOCIAL MEDIA LIMIT COMING FOR THOSE UNDER 13

Speaking on CNN Türk, Uraloğlu signaled that a regulation for social media is coming and stated that an age limit is being discussed.

Stating that an access ban will be introduced for those under 13 for social media restrictions, Uraloğlu said, "There will be parental consent for those between 13 and 16. We will tell the platform not to provide that service at certain hours."

"NOT CENSORSHIP"

Pointing out that there are many gambling and sexually explicit posts on social media, Uraloğlu continued as follows:

"We do not want to call it censorship, and we are not calling it that. There will be certain measures. We will say that individuals under 13, 16, perhaps 15 years of age should not have these accesses. Therefore, it would not be correct to label it as censorship.

We have not focused much on children's gaming hours according to the country's time, but we are discussing it from time to time. We will say do not provide that service between 11 PM and 6 AM. In some countries, public institution employees have been banned from using certain platforms.

We are exchanging views; we have not reached the point of saying 'this is our draft, what do you say?'. It will happen within the coming year.

75 million of our population use social media. The average social media usage time in the world is 6.5 hours, for us it is 7 hours."

Giving examples from gaming sites, Uraloğlu noted the following:

"They will create a safer environment by implementing some applications for children. We are experiencing this with Roblox; we say 'remove these contents', and there are such decisions. When this is done, there will be no problem. They can take a child who enters innocently into a gaming platform and lead them to very different channels. It can lead to everything from virtual gambling to prostitution, sexual content, and peer bullying. In this sense, we are thinking about content removal in general. We take the issue of security into account. Catalog crimes already exist."

RESPONSIBILITY LIES WITH THE APPLICATIONS

Noting that they do not find the sharing of personal information correct, Uraloğlu stated that they will place the liability on social media channels and added:

"We do not find the sharing of personal information correct. We will place the liability on social media platforms. Artificial intelligence has developed so much that it will estimate the age of the person coming based on their tendencies and usage, and will say accordingly, 'you are not at this age'. It will block them accordingly. It is like this in the world as well."
