Abundance of whiting in the Black Sea: It has overtaken anchovy

Fishermen in the Black Sea are returning with nets full of whiting. Ahmet Çoğalmış, a fisherman in Trabzon, stated that they are experiencing the most bountiful season for whiting in recent years, saying, "Following the abundance of anchovy and horse mackerel, we are now seeing an abundance of whiting. Whiting is 50 TL. We are experiencing such a season for the first time."

Fishmonger Gökmen Şahin expressed that they are experiencing the cheapest period for fish prices, stating, "Whiting and horse mackerel have come in abundance. Depending on the size, whiting is 50-100 TL per kilogram, and horse mackerel is 100 TL per kilogram. Currently, these are the cheapest fish. The lowest fish prices are for anchovy, whiting, and horse mackerel. I think if the weather continues like this, the abundance will continue."

Fisherman Erkan Keleş also noted that they are selling whiting for 50 TL today, which they previously sold for 150 TL, saying, "Whiting is 50 TL; prices have dropped significantly today. Even bonito has returned, and its price is 75 TL. Whiting was expensive before. However, it has become abundant for a week now, and we are selling nice, large whiting for 50 TL. We used to sell it for 100-150 TL."
