Access to Murat Ongun's X account restricted on national security grounds
The social media account of Murat Ongun, who is currently detained as part of an investigation into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB), has been blocked on grounds of national security and public order.
An access ban has been issued for the X (formerly Twitter) account belonging to Medya AŞ Chairman of the Board Murat Ongun, who is currently in prison as part of an ongoing investigation into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. The access ban was implemented under current legislation aimed at protecting national security and public order.
OTHER ACCOUNTS HAVE BEEN BLOCKED PREVIOUSLY
In the past, the account used by CHP presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu while he was in Silivri Prison, as well as the social media accounts of the Presidential Candidate Office, were also blocked for similar reasons.
In the decision announced by the platform Engelli Web, it was stated: “Murat Ongun's X account has been blocked from access under Article 8/A of Law No. 5651, on the grounds of protecting national security and public order. The account has not yet been made invisible from Turkey by X.”
Such access ban decisions regarding social media accounts are occasionally issued on grounds of public order and security. An increase in the number of similar measures taken against social media platforms has been observed in Turkey in recent years.
