Aegean earthquakes trigger action: Siren system installed in İzmir
The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has announced new measures, stating that the effects of potential major earthquakes, tsunamis, or volcanic eruptions resulting from the earthquake swarm activity in the Aegean Sea could reach Turkey.
The Aegean Sea is witnessing continuous tremors. AFAD reported that the effects of potential major earthquakes, tsunamis, or volcanic eruptions resulting from the earthquake swarm activity in the Aegean Sea could reach Turkey. It announced that a mobile siren system has been dispatched to İzmir, Muğla, and Aydın.
The statement shared information that a board consisting of the AFAD Earthquake Advisory Board, the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA), the General Directorate of Meteorology, the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, and scientists has been formed to continuously monitor the event from different perspectives since the moment seismic activity began to intensify.
Noting that a mobile siren system has been dispatched to İzmir, Aydın, and Muğla to warn the local population in the event of a possible tsunami or emergency, the statement included the following:
"The existing system, capable of sending SMS messages to citizens in potential emergencies via the notification and dissemination system, has been kept ready. Reinforcement personnel and equipment from the provincial AFAD directorates of Ankara, Antalya, Bursa, Diyarbakır, Sivas, and Samsun have been assigned to the governorships of İzmir, Aydın, and Muğla. Integration between the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute Tsunami Warning System and the AFAD Disaster Management and Decision Support System (AYDES) has been completed. In this way, any incoming tsunami warning can be delivered directly to all AYDES users and citizens in the region."
