AFAD statement on when aftershocks will end: Expected to decrease and cease

In the statement made by AFAD, it was noted, "On Wednesday, April 23, at 12:49, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake occurred in the Sea of Marmara, off the coast of Silivri. 

The earthquake was felt with light intensity in our provinces within a 300-kilometer radius of its epicenter. The epicenter of the earthquake is approximately 24 kilometers away from Silivri, the nearest settlement. 

During the earthquake, settlements on the southern coasts of Istanbul were shaken with low accelerations corresponding to an intensity of 5. With the contribution of long-standing risk reduction efforts, the earthquake did not cause any structural damage and there was no loss of life," the statement said.

Stating that a total of 291 aftershocks have been recorded since the main shock, the statement continued, "A total of 291 aftershocks have been recorded so far since the main shock. The total number of aftershocks with a magnitude of 3.9 and below is 283, the majority of which are below 3.

The number of aftershocks with a magnitude of 4 and above is 8. When the distribution of aftershocks over the last 28 hours is examined in four-hour intervals, it is observed that they have been on a downward trend over the last 16 hours. 

Aftershocks are expected to decrease and cease within the next few weeks. The energy released by the Mw 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred on April 23, 2025, is over 30 kTon of TNT, and this energy corresponds to approximately 4 times the Mw 5.8 earthquake that occurred in the same region on September 26, 2019," it said.
