Alarming statement from Naci Görür following the Çanakkale earthquake: Will it trigger the major Marmara earthquake?

A 4.4-magnitude earthquake occurred in Eceabat, Çanakkale. The earthquake, which took place at 14:34, was also felt in the center and districts of Çanakkale. Following the earthquake in Çanakkale, geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür shared a post on the social media platform X shortly after.

PROF. DR. NACİ GÖRÜR POINTS TO THE NAFZ: WILL IT TRIGGER THE MARMARA EARTHQUAKE?

In his warning accompanied by a map, Görür pointed to the North Anatolian Fault Zone. He stated that the earthquake would affect the segment of the NAFZ expected to rupture in the Marmara region. Sharing the map showing the fault lines, Görür wrote the following:

"A 4.4 earthquake occurred in the Gulf of Saros, Eceabat, Çanakkale. The earthquake is within the North Anatolian Fault Zone. This earthquake will, one way or another, affect the segment of the fault expected to rupture in the Marmara region to some extent."

WARNING OF A 7.5-MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE

Scientists state that the major Marmara earthquake, which has been expected for years, will definitely occur and could happen at any moment. It is noted that this devastating earthquake poses a serious threat to the Marmara region and especially to Istanbul.

Experts say there is a significant accumulation of stress on the North Anatolian Fault Line, which cuts across the Sea of Marmara from end to end. The fault line starts from the Gulf of İzmit and splits into two branches, north and south, with the Adalar and Kumburgaz faults forming the risk areas closest to Istanbul.

Prof. Dr. Naci Görür frequently points out that after the 1999 Gölcük and Düzce earthquakes, a large amount of stress accumulated on the northern branch of the North Anatolian Fault at the bottom of the Sea of Marmara. Görür states that a displacement accumulation of up to 5 meters has formed on the fault line, which he says implies an earthquake of magnitude 7 to 7.5.
