Agos Newspaper: 'The Court of Cassation applied the statute of limitations to the charge of membership in an organization, so he did not receive an additional sentence'
Agos Newspaper has issued a statement regarding the release of Ogün Samast, the murderer of Hrant Dink.
Ogün Samast, who murdered the Editor-in-Chief of Agos Newspaper, Hrant Dink, in an armed attack in front of the newspaper building on January 19, 2007, was released in the evening hours under conditional release from the Bolu F-Type Prison, where he had been transferred in February.
HE DID NOT RECEIVE AN ADDITIONAL SENTENCE DUE TO THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS
Agos newspaper, where Hrant Dink served as Editor-in-Chief until he was murdered, stated, "The lawyers for the Dink family had filed an objection regarding membership in an organization for Ogün Samast. The court ruled in this direction, but the Court of Cassation viewed the membership under Article 220 and applied the statute of limitations to the charge of membership in an organization. Thus, Samast did not receive an additional sentence."
Agos noted that the Dink family's lawyers had filed an objection for "membership in an organization" regarding Ogün Samast, but that the Court of Cassation had applied the statute of limitations to the relevant crime.
The statement from Agos is as follows:
"The lawyers for the Dink family had filed an objection regarding membership in an organization for Ogün Samast. The court ruled in this direction, but the Court of Cassation viewed the membership under Article 220 and applied the statute of limitations to the charge of membership in an organization. Thus, Samast did not receive an additional sentence.''
