Ahmet Ercan draws attention to the volcanic danger in Turkey: '7.4 magnitude earthquakes may accompany them...'

Geophysicist Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan issued important warnings in a post on his social media account, stating, "While Turkey waits for earthquakes, it forgets about active volcanic eruptions."

Listing 3 volcanoes, Ercan said, "Ağrı erupted in 1840, Nemrut in 1657, and Tendürek in 1855. Tendürek is emitting gas and steam, and Ağrı is stirring. Eruptions could be accompanied by M7.4 earthquakes. Doğubayazıt, Çaldıran, and Erciş must take precautions. Geophysical measurements [are needed]."

Ercan later made another post, saying, "We are going to Ağrı-Iğdır-Bitlis-Van between July 25-29 with 33 people to observe the Ağrı-Tendürek-Süphan-Nemrut-Artos volcanoes, which erupt and produce earthquakes as a result of the north-south compression of Eastern Anatolia."

"IĞDIR, DOĞUBAYAZIT, ERCİŞ, AND ÇALDIRAN ARE UNDER THREAT"

Reminding that Mount Ağrı erupted lava 3 times in 1890 and caused an earthquake effect of 7.4 magnitude, Ercan warned, "1,900 people died from lava and ash. The mountain has been roaring since 1900. Geophysical and geodetic observations must be initiated. Iğdır, Doğubayazıt, Erciş, and Çaldıran are under threat."
