Ahmet Ercan evaluates the 4.3 magnitude earthquake felt in Istanbul: 'Nauseating'

Joining a live broadcast on Sözcütv to evaluate the 4.3 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of Büyükçekmece, Övgün Ahmet Ercan outlined his concerns regarding the location of the quake.

Ahmet Ercan stated the following:

This is not an aftershock to be welcomed. There are two branches waiting to break here; one is the Istanbul branch, which starts at Büyükçekmece and extends to the front of Zeytinburnu, and the other is the Thrace branch, which runs from Büyükçekmece to Şarköy...

When we look at the aftershocks, we saw that the tremors were moving from the earthquake's epicenter toward Istanbul; this resembled a phenomenon called creeping. I calculated its length today; approximately 28 kilometers have ruptured since the 6.2 magnitude earthquake....

The aftershocks stopped linearly and have now started to move backward, but they were occurring much more sparsely. The earthquakes were largely damping down, and they had indeed damped down; that is what AFAD had said.

I was of the same opinion, but I can say that today's 4.3 magnitude earthquake was a bit nauseating. This earthquake shows that the tension has jumped to the Istanbul branch.

This could also be a local release of tension. If a buildup of tension begins toward the front of the Istanbul branch, then that would be a major problem, and an alarm would be raised. That is the most frightening scenario! I hesitate to say these things because the information is very fresh...

We will look at the trend this evening; are the aftershocks continuing? Is this just a one-off strike, or will it continue? If it continues, I fear that...

AFAD and Kandilli should examine and monitor this closely!

In terms of location, it was nauseating because it occurred on the Istanbul branch. The previous ones had occurred on the Thrace branch. Since it is new, it will be interpreted further.

What worries me about this earthquake is that if tremors start occurring on the Istanbul branch, then we will be talking about very different things. That would mean the tension here has bypassed Büyükçekmece and shifted toward the coast of Istanbul...

Foreign scientists also shared this concern. We do not want to disturb anyone's peace without sufficient evidence, so we will stop and watch the 4.3 magnitude quake for now, and if other additions occur on the Istanbul branch alongside this 4.3, then it means things are not going well. I do not want to say too much with little data...

Considering the tensions coming from İzmir, the 6.2 magnitude earthquake was expected to occur off the coast of Küçükçekmece, but it did not happen there; it skipped this solid section and occurred in Silivri. Yet, the Istanbul branch was next in line, and it skipped that.

EVALUATED THE AFTERSHOCKS OF THE 4.3 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE

While evaluating the aftershocks of the 6.2 magnitude earthquake, Ahmet Ercan had stated that the 4.3 magnitude earthquake occurred on a different branch and that it needed to be monitored. After his initial statement, Ercan joined the live broadcast again to evaluate the aftershocks that occurred later in the night and made the following comment:

"It is necessary to look at the locations of the new earthquakes; the nearest major city is used for jumps! When you look at their locations, we see that they are gathered on a fork, and we see that they have not passed the east of Büyükçekmece; in other words, we are currently in a safe area regarding the Thrace fault, and we will continue to monitor the Istanbul branch."
