Ahmet Hakan reacts to house arrest imposed on Özlem Gürses: 'It's all very unnecessary, all very exaggerated'

Journalist Özlem Gürses was brought to Istanbul after being detained in Ankara, with the justification being the remarks she made on her YouTube channel: "As you can see, the ISIS structure, that is, the TSK-SNA structure, has made small gains in regions where Kurds are present." Gürses was detained in Ankara and subsequently brought to Istanbul, with the aforementioned remarks cited as the reason.

Gürses, who was kept waiting for 7 hours to give her statement at the Vatan Police Headquarters, was then referred to the Çağlayan Courthouse after undergoing a medical examination.

Regarding Gürses, who was referred to the Criminal Judgeship of Peace with a request for arrest, a judicial control decision was issued, including house arrest and a travel ban.

Hürriyet Editor-in-Chief Ahmet Hakan, known for his proximity to the government, reacted to the investigation launched against Özlem Gürses and the subsequent house arrest decision.

In his column today, Hakan expressed his view, stating, "I listened to the words that led to her detention. The phrase 'ISIS structure' is a complete gaffe. It was an unconscious remark. There is no intention to equate the Turkish Armed Forces with ISIS. Besides, such things can happen on screen. I wish she had realized it during the broadcast and made an immediate correction."

Hakan criticized the situation with the words, "Being detained at a hotel in Ankara, being brought to Istanbul, and finally being placed under house arrest... It's all very unnecessary, all very exaggerated. You invite them, you ask them, 'what was your intention?'... And she would explain that it was a 'slip of the tongue.' And the matter would end there. * We are second to none when it comes to unnecessarily blowing things out of proportion."
