Ahmet Hakan's call to Ali Yerlikaya: 'All of this is the duty of the Ministry of Interior'

Hürriyet newspaper Editor-in-Chief Ahmet Hakan addressed Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya in his column today.

"The Narin case, the murder of police officer Şeyda, the Beyoğlu harassment incident, the beheading atrocity... Events are happening one after another," Hakan said. "One ends and another begins. With each one, the public is on edge. The most brutal, bloodiest images are spreading uncensored on social media. In some cases, concerns about insecurity grow even further due to problems in the execution system. Most importantly: we are witnessing types of savagery that we have not been very accustomed to until now," he commented.

'ALL OF THIS IS THE DUTY OF THE MINISTRY OF INTERIOR'

Hakan continued his words as follows:

"The conclusions drawn from all of this are as follows: The public is anxious. The perception that 'we are not safe' has taken hold. There is panic. Women are turning to buying pepper spray. The belief that the streets are unsafe for women is growing.

It could be said that it is being exaggerated, it could be said that there is no dramatic increase in crime rates, and examples from other countries could be given. But I don't think these will have any meaning. Because fear and panic have permeated society.

At this point, the greatest duty falls to the Ministry of Interior. To reassure the public, to dispel the panic, to give messages of determination that will eliminate the perception of insecurity, to take additional measures, and to share these measures with the public...

All of these, every single one, are the duty of the Ministry of Interior.

'HE MUST ADDRESS OUR PEOPLE TIRELESSLY'

Right now, the public...

Has a great need to feel safe, to hear that measures have been increased, to get rid of the panic, and to relax.

Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya is a minister trusted by all segments of society, especially due to his relentless fight against organized crime gangs.

Yerlikaya's most important issue these days should be the safety of cities.

He must appear before the public and address our people tirelessly, without saying it is too much."
