Ahmet Hamdi Çamlı's inflammatory words aimed at İlber Ortaylı: 'The conceited one they call I-dot Ortaylı'
Ahmet Hamdi Çamlı made headlines last week with his 'Bloody coup of 1923' tweet, amid allegations that he was alluding to the proclamation of the Republic. Following those remarks, which drew criticism even from within the AKP, Çamlı has now become the focus of attention again — this time over his statements about İlber Ortaylı.
Çamlı had been the target of backlash over a series of recent statements.
Ahmet Hamdi Çamlı this time used shocking language about İlber Ortaylı.
İlber Ortaylı had responded to Ahmet Hamdi Çamlı's recent 'Bloody coup of 1923' tweet with a column piece.
Former AKP deputy Çamlı addressed the renowned historian İlber Ortaylı as 'I-dot Ortaylı' and said the following:
"This conceited person they call I-dot Ortaylı — whom I understand became a professor without any research credentials — has attributed to me the slanderous lie that I said 'bloody coup against the Republic,' which I never said.
Using that slander as a pretext, he has targeted me from his prominent platform in the public eye.
A man who can barely make ends meet has gone and threatened me.
On top of that, he has implied a threat by invoking the army as if it were their own guarantee — showing the stick from under the cloak.
Oh, you conceited professor, oh… My heart goes out to those students you taught and the poison you injected into them.
That wasn't enough for our screen-hogging conceited professor. He also declared himself a true Turk and pushed us into the category of 'certain groups living in Turkey.' Well, well — do you laugh or do you cry? They are the owners of the estate and we are the serfs.

WHAT DID İlber Ortaylı SAY ABOUT AHMET HAMDİ ÇAMLI?
Prof. Dr. İlber Ortaylı wrote the following in his column in Hürriyet newspaper regarding Ahmet Hamdi Çamlı's 'Bloody coup of 1923' tweet:
"The matter is growing. Another person from the same circles (A. H. Çamlı) has been referring to the Republic as 'Çamuriyet' [a derogatory wordplay on 'Cumhuriyet,' meaning 'muddy republic']. This taste for vulgar humour shows a tendency to spread. The founders of our Republic are not ordinary politicians, Enlightenment intellectuals, or coup plotters from just any country. They are the command staff who passed through a great war, liberated the homeland from occupation through successful pitched battles and positional warfare, and the bureaucrats and leading figures who organised the national resistance government and saved the fatherland.
Creating speculation around this event is the work of small-town degree-holders who know nothing of history, geography, or the world around them. I do not believe that behind this agenda of theirs lies any serious conviction or ideological stance. Their positions shift. If they succeed in dragging Turkish society where they want it, the chaos that will ensue will undoubtedly affect everyone — but will above all destroy themselves. We call on everyone to be vigilant on this matter."
