Akit columnist offers a 'coffeehouse-style' solution to the Middle East crisis: 'Let's build an atomic bomb!'

İbrahim Karataş, a columnist for the pro-government newspaper Yeni Akit, has penned an interesting article regarding the rising violence in the Middle East.

The main points of Karataş's article are summarized as follows:

THE NORTH KOREA EXAMPLE

(...) The real thing that needs to be said is the necessity of possessing nuclear weapons. This is such a weapon that even if you do not have tanks, planes, or a large army, it makes you an almost invincible power. If North Korea is not touched today, the reason is its atomic bombs. Of course, their enemies could defeat North Korea, but they prefer not to get involved because the losses would be high.

If Iran had an atomic bomb today, Israel could not threaten Iran. If Israel did not have atomic bombs, it could not carry out such brutal massacres. Arab countries would not act so cowardly either.

'IF WE HAD NUCLEAR WEAPONS...'

Even if some choose to ignore it, the Israeli threat in the region also applies to Turkey. If they were to hit one of our ships in the Mediterranean today, we would definitely fight. Because we would not leave the blood of our soldiers on the ground, and we would not show tolerance to Israel again as we did in the Mavi Marmara incident.

However, if we fight, we might be defeated. Or, if we somehow win, other nuclear powers would attack. Yet, if we had nuclear weapons, none of them would fight for Israel.

'RUSSIA AND PAKISTAN WOULD SUPPORT US'

Some will say that Turkey has signed the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. You know, the treaty that countries with nuclear weapons impose so that other countries do not possess the aforementioned weapons. It is such a treaty that it aims to prevent others from producing atomic bombs, but it does not ask countries that already have bombs to destroy them.

Therefore, the aforementioned treaty serves no purpose other than leaving Turkey defenseless. Moreover, an atomic bomb can be produced without withdrawing from the treaty, and its existence can be denied, just like Israel does. We believe that Pakistan and even Russia in this current period would provide support in producing an atomic bomb.

'WE WOULD BE SUBJECTED TO EMBARGOES, BUT SO BE IT'

Still, if it is learned that we are producing an atomic bomb, we will be subjected to embargoes, but so be it. For example, they made Pakistan suffer a lot because it possessed nuclear weapons, and they still do. However, thanks to its atomic bombs, Pakistan has protected itself against India, which has a population of 1.5 billion. In the context of Turkey, no embargo can be worse than the disgraceful life in a country where millions of people have been slaughtered by atomic bombs and the survivors live in shame. Our state must do what is necessary. If it does not, the sin of 85 million is upon it."
