The AKP and CHP feud over İzmir... 'The government had no shame and demanded money from the people of İzmir for the city's water needs'

A debate has broken out between the AKP and the CHP regarding the water crisis in İzmir. 

A response has come from CHP İzmir Provincial Chair Şenol Aslanoğlu to AKP İzmir Provincial Chair Bilal Saygılı, who criticized CHP's municipal management and stated, "Our dams in İzmir are sounding the alarm." Aslanoğlu said, "The Gördes Dam was going to be built for İzmir's water needs. The government had no shame and demanded the money for it from the people of İzmir." 

AKP İzmir Provincial Chair Bilal Saygılı shared the following message on social media, stating, "Our dams in İzmir are sounding the alarm. Unfortunately, the occupancy rate of our dams is 30%," and added: 

"Due to the unhealthy, inadequate, and unplanned infrastructure that is the work of CHP municipal management, we cannot protect or utilize our existing water resources. Because for decades, CHP municipal management has failed to build an infrastructure that would divert rainwater into dams to collect and store it there. Today, approximately 45% of the water reaching our taps is lost due to substandard infrastructure, and the cost of this loss and leakage is reflected in the bills of our fellow citizens in İzmir. The people of İzmir pay for water they do not use every month.

Another issue that poses a great danger is the rain we so desperately want to fall. We both want it to rain and are very afraid that incidents similar to the fate of our citizens who were electrocuted after the rain in recent days will occur.

Because CHP municipal management has turned living in İzmir into an ordeal, a risk, and a source of anxiety.

I am calling out to the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality from here. Inspect your lines that drain rainwater, starting with the storm drains, as soon as possible. Make the necessary renovations and arrangements.

İzmir no longer has the patience to experience a single negative event or for a single one of our citizens to be harmed. 

The greatest culprit for any potential negative situation, from the perspective of local administration, is the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, which has abandoned İzmir to a lack of service and negligence and has failed to provide the necessary coordination with relevant institutions."

'WHERE IS THE MONEY? WHERE IS THE DAM?'

CHP İzmir Provincial Chair Şenol Aslanoğlu responded to AKP İzmir Provincial Chair Bilal Saygılı's remarks on the water crisis via social media as well. 

CHP Chair Şenol Aslanoğlu asked, "You have asked where İzmir's water is. Where is the money? Where is the dam?" and wrote the following: 

"The Gördes Dam was going to be built for İzmir's water needs. The government had no shame and demanded the money for it from the people of İzmir. Yes, you heard that right! The government built a dam for İzmir's water needs and demanded the money from the people of İzmir. To date, the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality has paid 257 million liras. But the government, which could not manage to build the dam properly, failed to hold water in the dam. They built a dam that cannot hold water. They continue to collect money for the dam.

Those who take the money but cannot build the dam are also asking, 'Where is the water?'

The real question is very clear!

Where is the money?

Where is the dam?"
