AKP council member Rümeysa Eker resigns following controversial insults: 'Drug dealers are Kemalists'

A social media post by AKP Municipal Council Member Rümeysa Eker has stirred up the political agenda and the municipal council.  

The insulting remarks targeting Atatürk supporters and Kemalists caused tensions to peak during the municipal council session. Following the snowballing backlash, Eker resigned from both her party membership and her council seat.

CHP COUNCIL MEMBERS WALKED OUT OF THE HALL

During the latest session of the Terme Municipal Council, CHP council members brought the social media post in question to the agenda. Eker's shocking statements, which included, "In this country, pimps are Kemalists. Drug dealers are Kemalists. Those who say 'I let them touch me, I let them teach me' are Kemalists. Those who run sex shops are Kemalists; they support the left," were read aloud from the council podium. Following this, the protesting CHP members walked out of the council hall to protest the session.

DEFENDED HERSELF BY CALLING IT A "GENERAL INFERENCE"

As tensions escalated in the council, Rümeysa Eker's decision to stand by her insulting post further increased the heat in the room. Eker's defense of her highly controversial remarks by labeling them a "correct general inference" fueled the debates in the council.

POLITICAL CAREER ENDED WITH RESIGNATION

Following the remarks that sparked public debate, Rümeysa Eker was forced to take a step back. After intense backlash and internal party evaluations, Eker announced that she had resigned from both her AKP party membership and her position as a Terme Municipal Council Member.
