AKP's Hüseyin Yayman had signaled it by calling it a 'national security issue': The Ministry is taking action
Hüseyin Yayman, Chairman of the Turkish Grand National Assembly's Digital Channels Commission, signaled a potential ban by stating that online games could pose a national security threat. Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş announced that the issue will be addressed with experts at the Digital Addiction and Family Workshop to be held on October 1.
Hüseyin Yayman, the AKP Chairman of the Turkish Grand National Assembly's Digital Channels Commission, had signaled a potential ban by explaining that they were working on online games. Arguing that some games are a national security issue, Yayman had said, "We did not find our state on the street." It was stated that the government has determined a roadmap for digital addiction and will meet with children who play 'addictive' games.
According to the article by Hürriyet columnist Hande Fırat, Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş stated the following:
“At the Digital Addiction and Family Workshop we plan to hold on October 1, we will address digital addiction in parallel sessions with 3 separate groups.
The first group will consist of NGOs and academics working on this issue.
'RADICALIZATION, SUICIDE, DIVORCE AS A RESULT OF DIGITAL ADDICTION...'
The second group will consist of children who play these games. We will try to understand their motivations regarding the process. We will discuss the time they spend in the game, their motivations, and the processes that accompany the game.
The third group will include adults. Digital addiction is not just a process related to children; it also occurs in adults in various ways. We will both address this issue and talk about where children stand in the process from the perspective of parents.
We will also take into account negative individual, family-based, and society-based consequences such as radicalization, suicide, and divorce resulting from digital addiction.”
