AKP's Tayyar reveals the most important reason for police suicides: It ranks first
While the string of police suicides has even been brought to Parliament by opposition parties as a parliamentary question, no concrete steps have been taken by the government on this issue. AKP's Şamil Tayyar revealed the serious extent of these suicides in a post.
Sharing a post regarding the incident of a police officer who stole bracelets from a jeweler, AKP's Şamil Tayyar touched upon the issue of police suicides and stated that online gambling ranks first among the reasons for the suicides.
Here is that statement by Şamil Tayyar:
"A few days ago, there was a hearing at the Fatsa High Criminal Court for police officer Cumhur Yılmaz.
He had stolen 170 gold bracelets from a jeweler.
The police officer, who said he was very remorseful during the hearing, explained that he played online gambling, accumulated nearly 300 million liras in debt, and planned the robbery because he felt desperate.
A cautionary tale.
As you know, 51 police officers committed suicide in 2025, and 8 police officers have committed suicide in the first 50 days of this year.
A friend of ours from the Interior Ministry explained that online gambling ranks first among the reasons for suicide.
When researched, it is understood that the picture is even more dire.
Suicide cases in other professional groups that have increased in recent years are also largely sourced from online gambling.
That is why the instruction on combating online gambling sent by Minister of Justice Gürlek to the chief public prosecutors of 81 provinces is important.
The fact that the fight against online gambling was also addressed in today's Friday sermon shows that the state is focusing on the problem.
Of course, it would be incomplete to view the struggle only as a security and legal issue.
The effects of economic difficulties and deep poverty that have increased in recent years should not be overlooked.
It is obvious that the swamp cannot be drained without spreading prosperity to the base, and that other measures will remain insufficient.
In short, we are facing a great test."
