YRP Chairman Erbakan stated regarding the matter, "In the March 31, 2024 local elections, the mayors and municipal council members elected from our New Welfare Party are facing political blackmail methods from the AKP government.

Disregarding the will expressed by our nation on March 31 is not an appropriate behavior, neither politically nor morally," he said.

"THEY ARE CASTING ASPERSIONS"

The response to Erbakan's words came from AKP Spokesperson Ömer Çelik. Claiming that the mayors who want to join their party are being 'cast under suspicion,' Çelik said the following:

"The New Welfare Party is trying to cast aspersions on mayors who have shown the will to join the AKP's politics of works and services of their own free will. The New Welfare Party did not pursue an independent policy in many places during the local elections; it acted with the aim of causing the AKP to lose and helping the CHP to win.

The fact that it resorted to making offers to names who had previously engaged in politics within the AKP solely for this purpose is a situation they need to confront in terms of political principles. Those who talk about political ethics and blackmail should first take these concepts into account themselves."
