Detained in a dawn operation on the morning of March 19, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu was arrested on corruption charges on March 23 and sent to Silivri Prison. While İmamoğlu was also accused of terrorism in addition to corruption, his arrest in the 'urban reconciliation' investigation was rejected.

As protests continue across Turkey in the process following İmamoğlu's detention and arrest, details of what is being discussed in the corridors of the AKP have leaked.

Pointing out that the ruling wing has decided to wear down İmamoğlu and his team with corruption allegations and keep the trustee card on hold, Nefes newspaper columnist Nuray Babacan claimed that there are two goals in 'this decision, which aims to create a lame duck.'

Stating that the Istanbul municipal administration will be rendered ineffective with a new mayor to be determined by the CHP party assembly, Babacan used the expressions, “This administration will be kept busy for months trying to clear its name from corruption allegations. Furthermore, all state institutions will try to narrow the economic power of the metropolitan municipality and make it difficult for it to breathe.”

Stating that it is planned to weaken İmamoğlu's influence depending on the duration of his stay in prison, Babacan assessed, “While he struggles to prove that the corruption allegations are baseless, the energy of the party and those on the streets will drop. After a while, İmamoğlu will be turned into a political prisoner like Selahattin Demirtaş, whose statements are reflected in the media from time to time.”
