Alarm in AKP corridors! Explosive 'VIP list' claim in fund crisis: 26 people under scrutiny

It is claimed that the fund crisis and allegations of victimization, which have caused widespread public outcry, were among the main agenda items at a meeting between President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his party staff in the corridors of the AKP.

According to journalist Nuray Babacan, the fund crisis was discussed more than the parliamentary agenda during the meeting held on October 1, the opening day of the new legislative term of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM). Assessments were made during the meeting that the AKP could suffer serious political damage if the incident is not addressed quickly.

According to insider information, the view that “there is great reaction and anger among citizens” was expressed at the meeting. It was reported that while the number of traders is approximately 455 thousand, the number of people affected by the incident could reach 4-5 million.

According to the information stated to have been shared at the meeting, it was expressed that among the victims, approximately 150 thousand people invested around 100 thousand liras, and 300 thousand people invested around 1 million liras. Furthermore, it was alleged that a “VIP list” of 26 people and a list of approximately 5,000 people who conducted high-volume transactions were mentioned.

WARNING FROM STAFF FOR SWIFT ACTION

It was stated that some AKP figures argued that this crisis is perceived differently from previous corruption allegations. Accordingly, it was assessed that even voters who were not victims feel as if the money “came out of their own pockets” and that anger is high.

"They are evaluating it as if it came out of their own pockets. Those who are not victims share the same feeling. Anger due to the fund crisis is very high. If we do not take precautions quickly, the bill will be very heavy for us."

Among the suggestions voiced at the meeting, it was reported that identifying those who gained unfair profits through records at the Central Securities Depository (MKK) and initiating legal processes against those who do not make voluntary payments were included.

According to AKP staff, the 2 important steps that should be followed are as follows:

“1- All movements are recorded down to the last penny at the Central Securities Depository. The lists are clear; if those who gained unfair profits voluntarily pay twice their earnings, they will not face criminal proceedings. If they do not come forward voluntarily, all tools, from placing liens on their assets to taking legal action, must be used.

2- All managers and bureaucrats who were negligent in letting the matter reach this point must be held accountable. A change of duty and the issue of negligence of duty must definitely be brought to the agenda. If a cleanup is not done, this time the perception that ‘you are protecting those who turned a blind eye’ will be formed.”

However, it was noted that there are question marks within the party regarding whether the expected level of funds will be transferred to the mechanism stated to be created to compensate the victims' losses.

It was also reported that although it is said in the corridors that no resources will be transferred from the budget, concerns were expressed that a public perception of “you didn't give to us, you are giving to them” could arise. Among the allegations was that there were reactions to the appointment of a person who had previously served as the chairman of the Capital Markets Board (SPK) during the investigation process regarding the SPK.

On the other hand, it was stated that investors with money in the stock market have also started to convey their demands on the grounds that they were harmed due to the fund crisis. It was expressed that AKP figures are trying to explain that the study to be prepared does not cover this segment, but they assess that the process could bring new demands with it.
