Alarming warning from WHO: 94 percent of Turkey to be obese

According to the latest research conducted by the World Health Organization, Turkey is among the countries with the highest rate of obesity increase.

It was stated that the obesity rate is expected to reach 70 percent globally and 94 percent in Turkey by the year 2060.

It was noted that artificial intelligence will evaluate the results of the obesity study to be conducted in 9 countries, including Turkey.

President of the Hypertension and Atherosclerosis Society and eproBes Project board member Prof. Dr. Serap Erdine, Prof. Dr. Manuel Tena-Sempere from the University of Cordoba in Spain, artificial intelligence researcher Peter Atanasov from France, and the project manager from Spain, Javier Carrero, discussed obesity in Istanbul.

The research, financed by the European Union with a budget of 10 million Euros, will take place in Turkey as well as Spain, Poland, Germany, Belgium, Estonia, Lithuania, France, and Denmark. In the study, where even the umbilical cord blood of infants will be examined, the results will be evaluated using artificial intelligence.

Serap Erdine drew attention to the danger with the words, “20 percent of Turkey is obese, and 35 percent is overweight. However, by 2060, obesity is expected to reach 70 percent globally and 94 percent in our country.”

Prof. Dr. Manuel Tena-Sempere from the University of Cordoba in Spain said, "The internet has made people fatter. Obesity has now become a pandemic in the world. Not only hereditary factors but also nutritional habits, sleep patterns, and the excessive internet use that has increased in recent years are effective in obesity. We see obesity in 1 out of every 4 people. We will determine their risk factors. It is certain that the food industry has a major impact on obesity."
