Expert assessments regarding the 3.5-magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of Yalova in the Sea of Marmara have come to the fore.
Evaluating the tremor, which was felt in surrounding provinces, especially in Istanbul, Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan, Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy, and Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz made statements regarding the possible causes of the earthquake and the fault lines in the region.
EVALUATION FROM ERCAN REGARDING THE YALOVA EARTHQUAKE
Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan described the tremor that occurred in the Sea of Marmara as a local-scale activity. In his statement regarding the earthquake, Ercan used the expressions, "It is a local tension release. There is no cause for concern."
ÜŞÜMEZSOY: I DO NOT EXPECT A LARGE EARTHQUAKE IN THE REGION
Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy also shared his views on possible tremors in the region following the earthquake off the coast of Yalova. Stating that he does not have an expectation of a large earthquake, Üşümezsoy said, "A large earthquake is not expected in the region. At most 5."
TÜYSÜZ DREW ATTENTION TO THE FAULT WHERE THE EARTHQUAKE OCCURRED
Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz, on the other hand, made an assessment regarding which fault line the tremor might be related to. Stating that the earthquake may have occurred on the continuation of the fault that broke on August 17, Tüysüz made the statement, "It is likely the continuation of the fault that broke on August 17. It is not the Adalar Fault connected to Istanbul."
AFAD ANNOUNCED THE MAGNITUDE OF THE EARTHQUAKE AS 3.5
According to the data shared by the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), a 3.5-magnitude earthquake was recorded at 22:08 off the coast of Yalova in the Sea of Marmara. It was reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 7.96 kilometers below the surface.
The Kandilli Observatory also measured the magnitude of the tremor as 3.5.
