Altan Öymen is laid to rest

A ceremony is being held at the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye (TBMM) for former CHP Chairman and journalist Altan Öymen.

Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş, CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, AKP Group Chairman Abdullah Güler, and MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli also attended the ceremony. 

Following the farewell ceremony held at the Parliament for Öymen, another ceremony will be held at the CHP Headquarters.

WHO IS ALTAN ÖYMEN?

Born in Istanbul on June 20, 1932, Altan Öymen was originally from Trabzon. After his family moved to Ankara, he continued his education there and graduated from the Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences in 1955.

Öymen, who began his journalism career in 1950 as a parliamentary reporter for the newspaper Ulus, served as a reporter, writer, lead writer, and executive at newspapers such as Akşam, Cumhuriyet, Günaydın, Milliyet, and Radikal in the following years. Between 1962 and 1966, he served as the Press Attaché at the Turkish Embassy in Bonn, Germany. He managed the ANKA News Agency, which he founded in 1972, until 1979.

Altan Öymen's entry into politics began with his membership in the Constituent Assembly in 1961. He entered Parliament as a CHP Istanbul Deputy in the 1977 and 1995 general elections. In 1999, he was elected chairman at the 27th Extraordinary Congress of the CHP. After serving in this position for approximately 15 months, he handed over the duty to Deniz Baykal at the congress held in 2000. Öymen also served as the Minister of Tourism and Promotion for a period.
