Amendments to the Animal Protection Law have entered into force

The 17-article 'Law No. 7527 on Amendments to the Animal Protection Law,' which caused public outcry due to 'euthanasia' debates and was passed by the TBMM General Assembly on July 30, has been published in the Official Gazette and has entered into force.

Following its passage in the TBMM, the "Law No. 7527 on Amendments to the Animal Protection Law" has officially entered into force as of tonight (August 2).

WHAT DOES THE NEW REGULATION ON STRAY ANIMALS INCLUDE?

The 17-article 'Law on Amendments to the Animal Protection Law,' which caused public outcry due to 'euthanasia' debates, was enacted with the votes of the AKP and MHP following 28 hours of deliberations over two days in the TBMM General Assembly. The proposal was passed in the early hours of July 30 with 273 'Yes' votes against 224 'No' votes.

With the proposal, amendments will be made to the Animal Protection Law. Accordingly, the phrase "provided that human, animal, and environmental health are taken into account" will be added to the objectives of the Law.

In the work to be carried out regarding stray animals, the concepts of "owned animal" and "stray animal" will be clearly defined, as there is a requirement for cats and dogs to be registered in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry database under the Veterinary Services, Plant Health, Food and Feed Law in order to be classified as owned animals.
