Animal massacre in Gebze! Employees point to the law, municipality says 'we have no knowledge'

In the Gebze district of Kocaeli this morning, 43 animals, including puppies and kittens, were killed with drugs.

According to a report by Tuğçe Yılmaz from Bianet; Gebze Municipality employees stated that they killed the animals "within the scope of the newly enacted law." An animal rights advocate who also works as a local volunteer said that a total of 30 dogs and 13 cats were killed with a drug called "Keta-Control."

Another volunteer, who stated that all the animals were healthy and that they feed them every Wednesday, noted that when they went this week, they could not see most of the animals there. The volunteers, wondering about the fate of the animals, said that during their search in the area, they saw that the animals had been killed and placed in black garbage bags.

'WE WILL FILE A CRIMINAL COMPLAINT'

Semra Çelikkaya, President of the Kocaeli Nature and Animal Friends Association (KOHAYDER), reiterated that they feed the animals found dead in the garbage containers in front of the Gebze Municipality Stray Animal Care and Rehabilitation Center every day, and that the killed animals were healthy.

Çelikkaya stated that Gebze Municipality regularly kills animals, but today they were able to catch them "in the act." Çelikkaya continued her statement as follows:

"We opened the bags and saw that some of the animals were still alive, while others were dying. They didn't even bother to throw the drugs they used to kill the animals elsewhere. These are anesthetic drugs, and the animals died slowly and in pain. The Kocaeli Bar Association Animal Rights Center is also lying by claiming that the animals were sick. This is the only way they can hide that they are doing no work at all. We are still waiting for the prosecutor; however, the gendarmerie is here, officials from the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks are here, and the mayor is here. We are also waiting for our lawyers to give our statements to file a criminal complaint."

'WE WILL DO EVERYTHING IN OUR POWER TO HAVE THE RESPONSIBLE VETERINARIANS REMOVED FROM DUTY'

"We will do everything in our power to have this shelter closed. We will continue to fight until all shelters in Turkey are closed. They are incompetent at this job. Dozens of animals are being massacred before our eyes every day. We will do everything in our power to have the responsible veterinarians removed from duty."

When we called Gebze Municipality regarding the animal deaths, they said they were not aware of the incident.
