Anniversary of the February 6 earthquake: 'It was one of the greatest disasters of recent times'
The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023, were among the greatest disasters experienced in the region in recent times.
The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a written statement on the anniversary of the earthquakes that affected 11 provinces in Turkey and parts of Syria.
The statement, which included the words, "A year has passed since a devastating earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria, causing the deaths of 50,000 people in Turkey and 5,900 in Syria," recalled that tens of thousands were injured and thousands of homes, hospitals, and public buildings were damaged or destroyed.
EMPHASIS ON "DISASTER"
The statement used the phrase, "This was one of the greatest disasters of recent times in the region."
Noting that authorities in Turkey coordinated numerous medical evacuations and established field hospitals in the affected areas to provide care for the injured, the statement underscored that in Syria, the earthquakes affected communities already suffering from the crisis caused by 13 years of conflict.
The statement also emphasized that the WHO supported the earthquake-affected regions in Turkey and Syria in the field of health throughout this process.
