Another scandalous fatwa from the Diyanet

A new addition has been made to the controversial fatwas issued by the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet).  The Diyanet, which has sparked debate with numerous fatwas such as "There is no marriage impediment between an adoptee and the person who adopts a disaster victim," "One can divorce their spouse via telephone, fax, SMS, and the internet," and "Devils eat with their left hand," has now turned its attention to women's professional lives.

According to a report in Sözcü, the response provided on the Diyanet's website contains statements that are once again set to be widely discussed.

In the "Family and Religious Guidance" section of the Diyanet's website, answers were provided to frequently asked questions regarding family life. 

The Diyanet's response to the question, "Is a woman's employment dependent on her husband's permission?" has drawn backlash.

In its fatwa, the Diyanet provided the following explanation: "Islam has imposed certain duties and responsibilities upon the husband alongside the rights and authorities it has granted him in marital life. Accordingly, the husband is obligated to meet his wife's needs such as housing, alimony, and clothing in proportion to his economic power. Since the responsibility for providing alimony belongs to the husband, a woman has no obligation to work. However, according to Islam, a woman can, as a rule, work inside and outside the home; she can assist her husband in providing for the family's needs. Based on the relevant verses, jurists have deemed it necessary for a woman to obey her husband's legitimate requests. Within this framework, a woman's employment is also subject to her husband's permission."
